ATK Hy Free - Gamechanger?

Stop the press - Listen up you Salomon Shifters!

ATK’s new HY binding is a breakthrough in backcountry binding design — finally bridging the gap between traditional hybrid bindings and true lightweight touring performance.

For years, “hybrid” bindings have claimed to deliver the best of both worlds: the efficiency of a pin binding with the power of an alpine system. In practice, they’ve too often delivered the worst of both — extra weight, complex mechanisms, and frequent reliability issues. Models like the Salomon Shift, while conceptually impressive, have become notorious for icing, jamming, and mechanical failure — a binding we’ve consistently seen fail in real backcountry use at Battle Abbey Backcountry Lodge.

The ATK HY represents a complete rethink. Its fully machined metal toe piece and minimal moving parts strip away the unnecessary complexity that plagues earlier hybrids. The result: less icing, fewer failure points, and a clean, functional design.

At 675g per pair, the HY doesn’t quite match the featherweight simplicity of pure pin bindings — and that’s fine. For those who still prefer the solid feel and ski performance of a hybrid system, this binding is a game changer. It finally delivers hybrid-level power without the penalty of bulk, fragility, or constant tinkering.

In short, the ATK HY is the hybrid binding we’ve been waiting for; a design that prioritizes what matters most when you’re far from the trailhead.

We're excited to see how they hold up this winter season at Battle Abbey! Early initial impressions - we're excited!!
